Digital Material for Teaching Reading

In today's digital era, integrating technology into English language teaching (ELT) is an appropriate option. Students tend to be more motivated when learning is combined with digital tools. So, as a future English teacher, I have explored various online tools that can help improve students' reading skills effectively and interactively. Two digital tools that can be used to support the development of English reading skills are the British Council LearnEnglish (website) and Beelinguapp (mobile app).

One of the most recommended tools for improving reading skills is the British Council LearnEnglish website. Besides offering free access without requiring users to sign in, this website also provides a variety of free reading materials, including short stories, articles, and other short texts such as poster, massages, and letter completed with exercises. The content of British Council LearnEnglish is suitable for learners from Beginner (A1) to Advanced (C1), especially with the age group of 12 years old to adults. This website also helps students to develop their sub-skills, such as, skimming, scanning, and vocabulary, through the exercises provided. Additionally, it supports ELT by providing interactive activities and downloadable worksheets that help teachers adapt the material and ensure students’ reading comprehension in class. For example, in a reading lesson, the teacher divides students into groups and assigns each group a different topic from the website. Then, they can work together to complete the exercises based on the topic they got. However, this website may not be suitable for long-term use because the range of topics is limited.

Another useful digital tool for developing reading skills is Beelinguapp. Beelinguapp is a mobile app available on Android and iOS that offers bilingual reading texts in English and other languages, supported by audio narration. This app also provides various interesting topics based on users’ interests, such as fantasy, fairy tales, education, travel, etc., which can enhance their motivation to read. Basically, this app is suitable for learners at the beginner to advanced level aged 12 to adults, and they can choose their level before using it. This app is helpful for learners who want to improve not only their reading but also their listening, pronunciation, and vocabulary with short text. Teachers can use this app in the class by showing the text from Beelinguapp to read together while discussing the vocabulary or main idea. Although Beelinguapp has a variety of interesting content, this app has limitations in that many stories can only be accessible to premium users, so that free users have limited content.

In conclusion, both British Council LearnEnglish and Beelinguap can be useful tools for teachers to teach English reading. It depends on how the teachers apply them in the classroom, because both provide an interesting way for students to read in this digital era.

Before I leave the house, I always check my bag to make sure I bring all my books. I often review my lessons at home in the morning, especially if I have a test. I go to school by bicycle. I am never late because I live near the school. At school, I always pay attention to the teacher and take notes carefully in class. I usually sit in the front row with my best friend. We sometimes study together in the library after school, especially when there is a group project. I enjoy learning in the library because it is quiet and peaceful there. At home, I do my homework in my room after taking a short break. I never do my homework in the living room because it’s noisy. I sometimes study in the evening, but I rarely study after 9 p.m. because I get sleepy. On weekends, I help my parents in the morni...
